Durga: The Goddess Behind Our Name

Who is Durga?
In Hindu tradition, Durga is a powerful goddess who embodies courage, protection and the triumph of good over evil.
Often depicted riding a lion or tiger, with multiple arms holding symbolic weapons, she represents Shakti, the divine feminine power that creates, protects and transforms.
One of her most celebrated stories tells of her battle against Mahishasura, a powerful demon whom the gods could not defeat. Durga emerged as a formidable warrior and ultimately overcame him, restoring balance to the world.
Her story is not simply about physical strength. It is about the courage to confront adversity, protect what matters and stand firmly in one's own power.
Strength has many forms
What makes Durga so inspiring is that her power does not exist in opposition to her femininity.
She embodies strength and compassion, determination and grace, fierceness and protection.
She reminds us that being strong does not mean becoming hard, and being gentle does not mean being weak.
There is power in setting boundaries. In making our own choices. In caring for others without forgetting ourselves.
Why we chose her name
When we created Durga Yoga Wear, we wanted our brand to represent something beyond clothing.
As a yoga teacher, I have always believed that movement can be a way of connecting with ourselves, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.
Durga became our inspiration because she represents the qualities we want every woman to feel free to express: strength, confidence, independence and compassion.
We don't believe there is only one way to be a strong woman.
You can be sensitive and courageous. Feminine and powerful. Calm and determined.
You can be all of these things, and so much more.
More than a name
For us, Durga is a reminder that strength is not something we need to prove to the world.
It is something we can discover, cultivate and carry within ourselves.
Through movement, through awareness and through the choices we make every day.
That is the spirit behind Durga Yoga Wear.
